The University of the Western Cape (UWC) today launched version 1.2 of its open source learning management system, KEWL (Knowledge.Environment for Web-based Learning).

According to UWC, KEWL is an ASP application that runs on Microsoft Windows Server technology, and has features that put it on par with the common commercial learning management systems.

It is made freely available to the and business community in Africa and the rest of the world, and is in use in more than 20 countries.

The release has a number of new features, including support for a multilingual interface and management of language translations, and skins that can be used to change the look and feel, as well as provide support to users with particular disabilities.

KEWL also has a multiple image uploader, tree-based navigation, a new WYSWYG content editor, improved internal e-mail, chat integration and instant messaging, buddy system, export content for writing to CD or static mirror, seamless integration of offline and online content, improved site statistics for monitoring, content planner and page sorter, automatic glossary parsing, and rewritten worksheet and quiz tools.

Nearly every tool has been improved and updated to run faster, provide a cleaner interface or to operate more effectively, says UWC.
