Value of online transactions soars

South African consumers appear to be becoming increasingly comfortable with online shopping, says online portal, icanonline.

Icanonline director Johan Strydom says this is illustrated by the fact that there was 73% increase in the average value of online transactions using the icanonline account during December 2002 compared with the same period in 2001.

"In December 2001 the average value of online transactions made by icanonline customers was R119. December 2002 saw this figure jump to R206.50," says Strydom.

"We`ve found that once they`ve successfully made their first purchase - normally something low but with high appeal - customers are far more likely to embrace online spending."

Another indicator of South Africans` enthusiasm for online shopping is that 26% of all icanonline account shopping transactions is done on the . "When you consider that there are still a lot of products that are difficult to buy online and that South Africans are relatively new to e-commerce, this figure is extremely impressive. It`s clear that the Internet cannot be underestimated as an important medium for consumers," says Strydom.
