Veeam has unveiled Backup & Replication v7, which offers protection built specifically for virtualisation.

The new release is designed to make backup and recovery easier, and to manage backup infrastructure, reducing hardware, storage and bandwidth needs. The headline features of v7 are Built-in WAN Acceleration and Backup from Storage Snapshots.

Built-in WAN acceleration enables backups to be automatically transferred to offsite locations, removing the need to purchase and deploy a general-purpose WAN acceleration appliance, or to acquire additional bandwidth for offsite backups. Backup from Storage Snapshots, which has been developed in partnership with HP, reduces stress on the virtual infrastructure by enabling a backup job to keep a VM snapshot for a brief period only.

Backup from Storage Snapshots uses changed block (CBT) to reduce backup time for incremental backups, enabling IT to make as many backups as needed, as frequently as needed. The ability to create backups more efficiently, even for I/O intensive workloads, and including during business hours, will improve RPO and reduce impact on the production environment, according to Veeam.

"With backup and replication using storage snapshots, IT is no longer limited by the traditional off-hours backup," says Ratmir Timashev, president and CEO of Veeam Software. "Instead, IT can back up three or four times every hour if they desire, ensuring that, in the event that some or all of the production environment goes down, little, if any, will be lost."

The release also incorporates seven other features, including updates for cloud integration, the capacity to manage backups directly from vSphere, integration with Microsoft SharePoint, more archiving options, enhanced restoration capacity, and Virtual Lab for replicas.

Veeam Backup & Replication v7 will be available from the third quarter of 2013, with the headline features of Built-in WAN Acceleration and Backup from Storage Snapshots available in the new Enterprise Plus edition.

"Data protection, for too long, has been a thorn in IT's side because it has what we call the '3C' problem of a legacy solution: limited capabilities, complexity and cost," says Timashev. "With this latest version of our flagship software, we're once again disrupting existing markets by including capabilities that others sell as expensive, separate components. Veeam Backup & Replication v7 removes obstacles to offsite backup with Built-in WAN Acceleration and brings to life the full potential for data protection of the virtual infrastructure."
