VERITAS Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS), the industry`s leading enterprise-class application storage management software provider, today announced that SAS Institute Inc., the market leader in integrated data-warehousing and decision-support software, has selected VERITAS NetBackup to protect mission-critical data residing on the Institute`s Network Appliance file servers. The VERITAS Software solution utilizes NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol), an open, standard, backup protocol co-developed by Network Appliance, to initiate and control backups and restores to SAS Institute`s NetApp filers.
SAS Institute conducted an extensive evaluation of all major storage-management vendors, assessing 40 different criteria, including the ability to protect data from remote sites and different groups. In one tested configuration, VERITAS NetBackup enabled SAS Institute to meet stringent, predefined backup windows for multiple Network Appliance filers, each with more than 200 GB of data. VERITAS NetBackup delivers "server-free backup" by sending Network Appliance filer data to tape devices directly attached to the file servers. This capability met the Institute`s` major requirements of supporting NDMP and keeping additional data and backup traffic off the network - providing high-performance local backups of enterprise data.
"After four rounds of evaluation, we chose VERITAS NetBackup based on its solid performance in NDMP backup and recovery for large-scale, UNIX and Windows NT environments," said Amy Kreiling, systems support manager at SAS Institute. "Software from SAS Institute helps Fortune 500 companies and other organizations turn their customer, financial, network-performance, quality and other data into information for better business-decision making. As a result, we have a special appreciation for the importance of data integrity and reliability. For SAS Institute, VERITAS NetBackup offered us the ability to back up and recover our data quickly and with minimal impact on network performance. This ability and VERITAS NetBackup`s centralized management of the backup and recovery process were truly deciding factors in our choice of VERITAS Software."
"As an industry-leading software company, SAS Institute certainly has a firm grasp of the unique requirements of large-scale enterprise customers," said Paul Sallaberry, senior vice president of worldwide field operations, VERITAS Software. "The selection of VERITAS Software for internal use after completing an exhaustive NDMP evaluation reinforces VERITAS NetBackup`s position as the industry`s leading NDMP backup and recovery solution."
"The partnership between VERITAS Software and Network Appliance announced in January 1998 has resulted in the delivery of an enterprise-class, NDMP backup and recovery solution to our mutual customers. We look forward to extending our marketing partnership with VERITAS Software," said Mike Marchi, director of enterprise marketing, Network Appliance.
SAS Institute is one of many VERITAS Software customers presenting its implementation experiences at VERITAS Software`s Annual Worldwide User`s Conference, November 1-5 in Anaheim, CA.
