Verizon intros Skype Mobile
Verizon Wireless has rolled out a Skype Mobile application for its smartphone subscribers, reports Fierce Wireless.
Russ Shaw, GM of mobile for Skype, notes the free application was built from the ground up in collaboration with Verizon.
Although Skype Mobile might cut into Verizon's long-term revenue, John Harrobin, Verizon Wireless' senior vice-president of digital media and marketing, explains that Verizon hopes to make up for any lost revenue by attracting new customers who are interested in Skype.
Nortel drives mobile
Nortel Carrier VOIP and Applications Solutions (CVAS) is deploying VOIP and hosted IP offerings for service providers, states eWeek.
The telco giant unveiled as 4G mobile VOIP solution that will enable service providers to integrate all cellular technologies including 2G, 3G, 4G LTE and WiMax networks.
Nortel CVAS is currently being bought out by US-based Genband.
Tesco shuts down VOIP service
Tesco will close its four year-old VOIP service at the end of April, says PC Pro.
Tesco's foray into communication services includes its branded mobile service, which piggy-backs off O2's network.
The service offered free calls between Tesco Internet phones, and cheap calls to landlines in the UK, USA, China, Ireland and Canada.
