Forgood has unveiled a virtual volunteering campaign that enables users to give their time and skills from the comfort and convenience of their desk or couch.
Launched last year, Forgood is an online platform that seeks to boost charity work in SA by connecting people with over 500 approved non-profit organisations across the country.
According to a statement, virtual volunteering links individuals and groups interested in making social change in a real and impactful way by connecting them to various causes online.
Traditionally, virtual volunteering included tasks like graphic design, social media management, editing and research work; however, this is branching out to include mentorship, proposal writing, strategic assistance, translation and counselling.
"Technology has opened so many doors for the social sector," says Andy Hadfield, CEO of Forgood.
"Citizens and businesses are eager to become socially active and engaged but they are often time-strapped. Virtual volunteering, besides being quick, simple and easy, allows individuals to do good from anywhere at any time - even from your office cubicle," he says.
"With virtual volunteering, employees can become active social citizens without having to leave the office. The benefit of this for business is increased morale and increased staff retention. An added bonus is that employee volunteer hours can be incorporated into a company's CSI mandate, which contributes to its BBBEE ratings."
The statement notes that becoming a virtual volunteer starts by logging on to a Web link and visiting the volunteering section on the Forgood site.
Users can then respond to an existing need or put up an offer. Taking a user's interests and skills into account, Forgood will connect a user to a worthy cause or distribute the offer to those causes that can make use of the virtual contribution.
