Virtual work the way to go, says Citrix

Johannesburg, 24 Jul 2002

The Western working world is going virtual and SA is perfectly placed to follow suit, Dave Jones, senior VP of corporate marketing and development at Citrix Systems, told delegates at the Citrix iForum 2002 Africa in Midrand yesterday.

[VIDEO]Jones, who delivered the keynote address, highlighted Gartner research that said by 2006, people would spend nearly 70% of their time working collaboratively - and not necessarily face to face.

"People are less inclined to travel. Not only because of the events of 11 September, but also purely from a convenience point of view," Jones said. "There are many megatrends driving people towards the notion of collaborative work from anywhere at any time. People will be able to get to each other, and to the tools and information they need, wherever they are.

"We believe that as speeds increase and improved technology becomes available, the virtual workplace will become the predominant way people choose to work."

He said SA has the infrastructure it needs to follow this trend. "There are no more 'second-class citizen` issues for SA. The virtual workplace can improve the work life and productivity of every knowledge worker no matter where in the world they are."
