Virtualisation app for iPad released

Wyse Technology has delivered on its plans to produce a Windows virtualisation application for the Apple iPad, reports V3.co.uk.

The PocketCloud application features an easy-to-understand user interface, enterprise-level security, and support for multiple standards and virtualised infrastructures, the company says.

PocketCloud has been available on the iPhone for some time, but this new version adds over 20 new features, according to Wyse.

Oracle updates VirtualBox

The VirtualBox hypervisor, now under the control of Oracle - if any open source software project can be said to be under control of a corporation, has been updated with a 3.1.6 release, writes The Register.

The 3.1.6 maintenance release follows a true 'major' release that came out of the project last November, when VirtualBox 3.1 was given the ability to migrate live partitions of running software from one physical machine to another.

That live can occur between any two machines that share a TCP/IP link and have access to the same iSCSI storage using either the NFS or Samba/CIFS file system, and it works with Solaris, Linux, Windows, or Mac OS being the host environment for the VirtualBox hypervisor.

Virtual desktops on the rise

The growing maturity of virtual desktop technologies and customer interest in Windows 7 has virtual desktop infrastructure vendors expecting big adoption numbers in 2010, states Techworld.

But while most CIOs are at least thinking about desktop virtualisation, this year's projects may be limited to pilots and small deployments because of up-front costs and technology challenges that hamper user experience.

An ITIC survey of more than 800 businesses worldwide shows 31% of respondents plan to implement VDI this year, more than double the previous year.
