Virus alert from SecureData: High risk assessment on 'Anna Kournikova', aka VBS_Kalamar virus

Outlook mass-mailing virus spreading quickly; updated protection available for customers, free online virus scanner detects/removes this latest threat

SecureData an ERP.com company and the exclusive sub-Saharan distributors of Trend Micro Inc, is warning computer users of a fast spreading virus known as "Anna Kournikova" or VBS_Kalamar.A. This virus is a mass-mailer, using Outlook to email itself as an attachment, and is spreading rapidly in the wild. is available immediately for all Trend Micro and SecureData customers and the latest pattern file and scan engine can be downloaded at

Concerned computer users can use Trend Micro's free online virus scanner, HouseCall (

http://housecall.antivirus.com

) to detect this threat.

The virus spreads in an email with:

  • Subject line: "Here you have, :o)"

  • Message text: "Hi: Check this!"

  • Attachment: "AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs".

  • Trend Micro products detect this virus as VBS_Kalamar.A

Recommendations for Protection

TrendLabs, Trend Micro's global antivirus research and support center, recommends customers update to scan engine version 5.200 or above and pattern file 749 or above to detect this virus. Both pattern file and scan engine can be downloaded at http://www.securedata.co.za

Customers using earlier scan engines are encouraged to update their scan engine.

Trend Micro's content filtering products, eManager for InterScan VirusWall and ScanMail for Exchange, can also be used to filter out the virus by its file name, subject line or message text.
