Virus issues stifle SME growth

Virus or malware issues cause about 43% of computer issues requiring small to medium enterprises (SMEs) to have their machines serviced, while hardware issues are to blame 40% of the time, according to the June Office Depot Small Business Index, says Gaebler.com.

This might be ominous news for small business owners who have been following the recent outbreak of hacks at big businesses such as Sony and Citigroup, especially since the Office Depot survey also suggests small businesses do not have the IT resources to implement sophisticated computer security measures.

Just 7% of small businesses surveyed employ an on-site computer technician, while over half turn to outside parties to resolve issues.

Small businesses surveyed noted that productivity suffered as a result of technology issues, reveals Gamut News.

In fact, about half of respondents (48%) stated that it took almost two to three days to have their computers repaired with a majority (67%) citing that computer issues have hindered them from doing their job.

“These latest survey results indicate a need for a knowledgeable and reliable resource for small business technology needs,” says Randy Wick, VP of merchandising for Office Depot.

According to the newest edition of the Office Depot Small Business Index, technology issues among small businesses are common with 75% percent of respondents citing that they have had a computer repaired at some point in time, writes MarketWatch.
