VMware intros View 4.0
VMware is targeting the rapidly growing desktop virtualisation space with the introduction of its signature virtual desktop solution, dubbed 'View 4.0', after having managed to corner the server virtualisation market, writes IT Pro-Portal.
The prime feature of this release is that it paves the way for the delivery of virtual desktop in a device-agnostic manner, which implies offering businesses the flexibility to run virtual desktops on a range of devices, including regular desktops, laptops, as well as smartphones.
Furthermore, View 4.0 is based on the PC-over-IP concept, which would ensure virtual desktops function on par with the real ones, according to the company.
Zurich outsources IT services
Zurich Financial Services is outsourcing IT services to CSC for 10-and-a-half years, reports ComputerWeekly.
The contract could be worth up to $2.9 billion if Zurich takes up the full range of services on offer.
CSC will provide data centre centralisation and server virtualisation, which will result in a reduction in hardware and increased energy efficiency.
CSC says: "The contract is designed to transform Zurich's existing data centre environment into a fully modernised, flexible and highly virtualised operation".
Virtualisation conquers networks, desktops
With claimed annual savings of £2 500 (R30 500) per server and £78 (R950) per desktop, virtualisation is moving on to conquer networks and desktops, say reports, according to eWeek.
Virtualisation is driving IT innovation and is predicted to be a $19-billion technology market, and reports say companies in the field are preparing for the next stages - desktop and network virtualisation.
Virtualisation appeals to businesses because it increases capacity, makes more effective use of resources, and reduces costs, says a report by industry analyst, Business Insights. It also enables companies to become more sustainable.
