The VMworld 2013 Conference kicked off yesterday in Barcelona, with about 8 000 delegates in attendance.
Dubbed the 'Defy Convention', the event was opened by VMware CEO, Pat Gelsinger, who announced several new products and solutions that the company is taking to market.
Gelsinger provided attendees with key insights into the virtualisation and cloud computing industry.
He also discussed the next generation of IT and how the software-defined data centre is extending the proven model of virtualisation and automated management across storage, networking and security. His presentation included discussions with customers who have used virtualisation to advance next-generation IT in their own organisations.
Maurizio Carli, VMware's senior VP and GM for EMEA, who also spoke during the opening ceremony, noted that the conference was important to the virtualisation company, which is also celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.
Carli gave a short history of the company; it was established in 1998, when server virtualisation was born. He pointed out that, in 1998, VMware made bookings worth $1 million. In 2002, he added, VMware had one million registered users, and in 2004, the company was acquired by EMC for $625 million. Less than 10 years later, in 2007, the company went public on Wall Street.
