Vodacom is hosting a developer workshop for women in a bid to encourage women to get actively involved in the creation of an ecosystem of local mobile applications in SA.

Aimed at providing South African women with the practical skills needed to develop Android mobile apps “from start to finish”, the workshop will be held tomorrow, at Hotel Accolades Boutique Venue, in Midrand, from 9am to 2pm.

Vodacom says the initiative forms part of its Vodacom Developer Programme, which aims to encourage local developers to develop apps that are relevant to the South African market, as well as the global environment.

“The workshop will impart 30 women participants an understanding of the processes, techniques and critical skills needed for mobile application development.”

media at Vodacom, says the operator's key objective is to empower more women developers, “so they can bring about change in their lives and communities by designing locally relevant apps”. He says the expectation is that the workshop will inspire more women into app development.

“This workshop will help participants to conceptualise an Android application, create an application for Android, package one's application for the market, and place an application on the Vodacom marketplace.

“We are planning to roll out a series of these workshops across the country for women that are interested in mobile application development.”
