SA's first mobile operator has enlisted some of the industry's biggest players in a venture aimed at strengthening the mobile application ecosystem in SA.

Vodacom - in partnership with BlackBerry, Google, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, CSIR, mLab, Qualcomm, Technology Innovation Agency and the Innovation Hub - is set to launch SA's first multi-platform mobile app development workshop next month.

Set to take place from 3 to 5 October, at The Innovation Hub, in Pretoria, the workshop forms part of the Vodacom Developer Programme. The operator says the programme aims to encourage local developers to design apps that are relevant to the South African market, as well as the global market.

Prins Mhlanga, managing executive of media at Vodacom, says industry players involved in the drive will present their best practice engineering techniques, and provide insights on some of the most advanced mobile application software development tools. “Developers will also gain insight on funding options available. We hope this programme will encourage local developers to get actively involved in the creation of an ecosystem of local apps in SA.”

Vodacom says day one of the workshop will cover the following topics:

* The Vodacom Developer Programme as a vehicle to drive the mobile app ecosystem in SA - presented by Mahlanga.
* The enterprise development opportunities in the mobile space - presented by Paulo Ferreira, head of enterprise mobility at Samsung.
* Opportunities for mobile apps in government - presented by McLean Sibanda, CEO of The Innovation Hub.
* Developing Windows phone games and an introduction to developing for Windows 8 - presented by Dave Russell, technical developer evangelist at Microsoft.
* Android, HTML5 and mobile Web development - presented by Ato Ulzen-Appiah, the Developer * Outreach Programme manager of Sub-Saharan Africa at Google; and Android development freelancer, Toby Kurien.
