Vodacom rallies behind the '16 Days of Activism` campaign

Johannesburg, 28 Nov 2003

Vodacom Group (Pty) Ltd has pledged its full support to the "16 Days of Activism" campaign against violence on women and children.

The "16 Days of Activism" campaign is a worldwide event, which is being driven by government in SA. The campaign has created a global movement to raise awareness, to address policy, social and legal issues, to campaign for the protection of survivors of violence and to call for the elimination of all forms of gender violence. It is also mobilising nations around issues of HIV/AIDS and human rights.

"Vodacom has demonstrated a commitment to positive change in SA through a significant investment in social upliftment programmes focusing on areas such as education, health and welfare as well as security and safety," said Mthobi Tyamzashe, Vodacom`s Group Executive - Corporate Affairs.

Vodacom has further embraced this year`s "16 Days of Activism" campaign both through community-based interventions and through a company-wide drive to create awareness and encourage its 4 000 employees to make direct, individual contributions.

Vodacom is directly participating through the following activities which are driven by the Vodacom Foundation:

* Vodacom is providing an SMS service line (082 003 9180) or phone (086 747 7400) which is being used by members of the public to pledge R10 donations, which will in turn be directed towards deserving charity organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

* The Vodacom Foundation will co-sponsor a breakfast with Telkom on the closing day of the campaign on 10 December 2003. The breakfast will take place at Parliament in Cape Town.

* During the campaign, the Vodacom Foundation will launch Kidz Clinic in Alexandra, which addresses the needs of emotionally and physically abused children.

* The Vodacom Foundation is also distributing white ribbons to all its regions in SA, which are sold to staff for a token price of R5, giving employees an opportunity to make direct, individual contributions to the campaign. The foundation will then match rand-for-rand the amount raised from selling the ribbons to staff. The proceeds will be channelled through to the national kitty of the Foundation for Human Rights.

* The Vodacom Foundation has provided white ribbons to the president and deputy president, cabinet ministers and deputy ministers, among others in government and the chief justice.

"Vodacom believes that supporting the '16 Days of Activism` campaign is the best call we`ll ever make," concluded Tyamzashe.
