Vodacom is nearing the end of its process to replace Shameel Joosub, who left the company to head up Vodafone Spain at the end of March.

CEO Pieter Uys says the operator is almost at the end of its process and will make an announcement “soon”. Uys was speaking today at Vodacom's results presentation for the year to March.

Vodacom SA is the biggest in the country, with 26.5 million subscribers, giving it the lion's share of the market, with about 50% of all subscribers. It is also its largest unit, accounting for R53 billion of Vodacom's total R61.2 billion revenue.

Analysts have speculated that the firm could hire someone from within Vodafone's ranks. UK-based Vodafone is Vodacom's largest shareholder, owning 65% of the local company.

Joosub joined Vodacom when it was launched in 1994 and is viewed as having been a “key architect in growing the business”. He started as an accounting clerk before being promoted to head up the company's local commercial arm in 2000.

Between 2000 and 2005, Joosub was responsible for increasing Vodacom's South African subscriber base from 2.5 million to almost nine million, says Vodacom.

He was promoted to MD of Vodacom SA in 2005, when the company had 12.8 million local subscribers.
