Vodacom has been voted third in the favourite brands category of the Markinor-Sunday Times top brands survey of 2005. Of the other local telecoms-related companies, Nokia was rated 8th and Telkom 9th best favourite brands.

According to Markinor, a total of 3 500 interviews were conducted for the survey - 2 000 of them in metropolitan areas and 1 500 in non-metropolitan areas.

Respondents to the survey were asked what their favourite brand is. Markinor says questions asked sought to measure the level of trust and confidence in the companies and brands that were remembered.

Respondents were also asked to state whether "it would matter a great deal to you personally if (brands mentioned) no longer existed." The answer from this question was used to measure a respondent`s loyalty and commitment to the brand.

Vodacom also won first place in the telecommunications category and fifth overall as the company operating in South Africa that has done the most for community upliftment.

"We are pleased that our investment in our brand and in various communities is recognized," says Vodacom CEO Alan Knott-Craig.

MTN came in second in the telecommunications category, with Telkom third and Cell C last. The survey does note, however, that Cell C is continuously improving its score

In addition to staking a place in the top 10 favourite brands, Nokia was also rated the best top cellular phone brand in the market.

The survey notes that Nokia is not only the best-known cellular phone brand but that consumers place a high trust and confidence in the brand. Motorola came in second and Samsung third, Siemens fourth.
