Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys hopes to present the company's board with a shortlist of candidates for the Vodacom SA MD post by the end of the financial year.

Vodacom is seeking a replacement for Shameel Joosub, after announcing at the end of last year that the current head of Vodacom's South African operations would move to Vodafone to take up the post as CEO of Vodafone Spain, one of Vodafone's largest operating companies.

Uys says the company has a “medium-list” of candidates and is currently interviewing for the position. He hopes to have a “shorter list” by the next board meeting, which is before the company's March financial year-end.

However, Uys could not indicate whether the post would be filled before Joosub leaves, at the end of March.

Vodafone is Vodacom's single largest shareholder, a position it attained after the local cellular company was unbundled by Telkom in mid-2009 and listed on the JSE. Vodafone owns 65% of Vodacom, SA's largest cellular operator.

The advertisement says candidates need to have a decade of experience at senior management level; a postgraduate degree, such as an MBA; a broad understanding of the global ICT industry with a focus on Africa; extensive profit and loss experience as a senior executive; and “solid relationships and credibility with key figures”.

The closing date for applications is 9 February and the candidate should be a “visionary and inspiring leader who instils confidence in employees, shareholders and business partners alike”, the advert reads.

Applications are being handled by auditing and accounting firm Deloitte.
