AST Enterprise Solutions Management (ESM), a business unit of the AST Group, has announced that Vodacom has purchased Quest Software`s SQLab Xpert and Spotlight on Oracle.
By utilising the extensive built-in knowledge database from these products, the majority of problems are resolved at first level support.
DBA`s will use the Quest products to quickly determine root causes of problems. "This will enable Vodacom to significantly reduce the frequency and duration of outages. It will also reduce the time spent by their Senior DBA`s on solving problems and rather free them up to perform the more complex tasks," explains Gerhard van Rensburg, GM of AST ESM - Cape.
Quest`s Spotlight on Oracle will graphically display, in real time, the actual server processes and flow of data in Vodacom`s Oracle database so they can quickly identify congested areas and take appropriate corrective action.
"As a DBA, you cannot keep your Oracle database running optimally if you cannot see and respond quickly to database performance problems," adds van Rensburg.
"Spotlight on Oracle will assist Vodacom correct their problems before they deteriorate. No other tool graphically displays, in real time, the actual sever processes and flow of data in an organisation`s Oracle database. From Spotlight on Oracle`s intuitive user interface, Vodacom will be able to quickly identify congested areas in their database and take appropriate corrective action." SQLab Xpert identifies offensive SQL statements and provides context-sensitive tuning advice, which can be tested against an organisation`s test or production environment in order to compare the suggested tuning scenarios and choose the solution that best fits an environment.
"Effectively tuning our database is critical to maximising the performance of our applications. Proactive tuning at the development phase ensures our applications will operate at peak performance when going into production," notes Jay Smit of Vodacom. "In addition, proactive tuning in the production
environment resolves performance problems before our end users are impacted." SQLab Xpert will assist Vodacom to find these problems and eliminate them by providing context-sensitive tuning advice for SQL statements based on the Oracle execution plan and the database structure. SQLab Xpert identifies and records offensive SQL statements, tunes the SQL and indexing scheme, and resolves I/O bottlenecks that consume system resources. SQL activity can be traced system-wide, by user session and by object.
SQLab Xpert also provides fast, intelligent advice on how to tune offensive SQL statements - improving response time and substantially increasing overall productivity.
