Vodacom service provider Smartcall, which specialises in prepaid cellular, has received the Competition Commission's approval for its acquisition of Smartcom for an undisclosed sum.
Smartcom is a Vodacom exclusive cellular contract provider.
The deal comes close on the heels of Vodacom's acquisition of 51% of Smartcall as part of a strategy to control its distribution channel.
At the time of the Vodacom deal in March, Smartcall had 2.72 million subscribers.
The company says the Smartcom acquisition will enable it to offer prepaid customers the ability to swap over to contract while retaining their original phone numbers.
Smartcom, which will continue to operate as an autonomous entity, is expected to contribute more than R600 million to Smartcall's consolidated turnover in the next year.
Smartcall MD Mark Attieh says customers, staff and distributors will benefit from the availability of pooled resources.
