Volvo cuts international bandwidth spend by 60%

Volvo Group, one of the world`s leading suppliers of transport solutions for commercial use, recently signed an international bandwidth deal that will see the company save 60% of its international telecommunication costs. The deal, provided as a joint effort between Intergr8 IT and MTN Network Solutions, went live recently after a three-month trial period.

Says Gert Ysell, IT Manager for Volvo SA: "Until recently Volvo SA have been connecting internationally with the use of dedicated point to point links. Even though this solution was initially satisfactory, it was not long before we outgrew it and required more bandwidth and better service levels.

"The extremely high price of the service pushed us towards investigating new technologies used in the world today, such as IP Sec and MPLS. Our investigations with Intergr8 IT and MTN Network Solutions led us to testing the new technologies and confirming that they outperformed and outpriced our current methods of connecting."

Volvo`s three months tests of the service, supplied by Intergr8 IT and MTN Network Solutions, covered areas such as latency delays, packet loss, availability and security. Each test performed was on a par or outperformed the existing service, which made the decision to move an easy one. Testing the solution first also meant that there was far less risk in changing providers.

"One of the benefits Intergr8 IT provides to its clients is finding solutions that will help customers to optimise infrastructure, technology and spend," says Robert Sussman, Director at Intergr8 IT. "Having a good understanding of the telecommunications industry and a long-term partner in MTNNS, it was not difficult to identify where we could add value in Volvo`s international requirements.

"In many ways we have not changed the solution Volvo has been using for the last few years, however, we have leveraged the economies of scale attained by MTNNS and used technologies previously unexplored by Volvo to increase their service and bandwidth while decreasing their costs substantially,"

Stuart Hardy, Sales Director at MTNNS, commented that this was one of many deals the partnership had created because of the trust between the organisations as well as the level of understanding of the telecommunications industry. Hardy also believes it is only a matter of time until all companies using similar infrastructure evaluate these technologies which are available in the market to significantly reduce cost and increase bandwidth and service.
