Vox Telecom, an independent telecommunications operator providing voice and data services to the southern African market, has achieved a high availability IT environment, allowing the company to offer users of its full hosting facilities 99.999% uptime, thanks to the use of APC, by Schneider Electric Galaxy uninterruptible power supplies (UPSes).
"Vox Telecom is using a Galaxy 6000, with a central a static switch and two 300kVA machines in parallel for N+1 redundancy," explains Rodney Callaghan, MD: Southern Africa at APC by Schneider Electric.
"The 6000 machine provides three-phase power protection to meet the specific requirements of small to large facility and equipment room applications, including high availability power, flexibility and low cost of ownership.
"This unit, in particular, was ideal for Vox Telecom due to its ability to provide the most effective combination of these factors, regardless of the complexity of the company's environment and conditions," he adds.
Since the implementation of the Galaxy machines, Vox Telecom has experienced constant availability. "We have completely eliminated downtime," says Shane Chorley, Executive Head of Vox Core. "Taking into account the large number of power outages businesses across the company have undergone over the past two years, we are pleased that Vox Telecom has not experienced any issues with its UPSes, generator or power grid. At this point, we are even able to perform maintenance on the UPSes without losing availability, as one machine is able to carry the load for the duration of the repair time.
"We initially opted for the Galaxy UPSes due to their reliability and stability, features that have been proven since their implementation at Vox Telecom," Chorley adds.
"A single percentage of downtime may seem negligible, but, for some industries, this could mean disaster," says Callaghan. "Think about one hour of unsafe drinking water, two unsafe plane landings per airport per day, 20 000 incorrect surgical operations per week or 22 000 cheques deducted from the wrong account every hour.
"Companies have become more and more dependent on infrastructure such as electricity and telephone lines than ever before, and it is key that they are aware of the issues caused by power outages and the steps that can be taken to combat this," he comments. "Through its decision to improve power availability to critical equipment and maintain a constant level of high availability, Vox Telecom has highlighted its forward thinking approach."
