VSAT customers face switch-off

Johannesburg, 28 Jul 2008

A number of Telkom's VSAT customers will be offline while the fixed-line operator upgrades the software used in ATM, point-of-sale and other satellite terminals on 10 August.

Telkom's acting group executive for corporate communication, Nabintu Petsana, says the scheduled maintenance will affect a number of customers in rural and remote areas that rely on the satellite uplink.

Telkom warns that, between 1am and 6am, it will be conducting scheduled maintenance of its very small aperture terminal hub, at Hartebeesthoek, which services a variety of businesses.

"The types of businesses that will be affected include: service stations, satellite campuses of universities and farmers who connect to the Internet via satellite," says Petsana.

Telkom says the maintenance is a software upgrade that is intended to enhance the bandwidth utilisation through the VSAT hub. And despite the fact that it is scheduled to take place between 1am and 6am, customers must also be aware that it might take longer than anticipated.
