VXL smashes Windows-based thin client terminal pricing with launch of Percio

Johannesburg, 15 Jan 2003

Reduces cost of ownership while improving IT performance VXL Instruments Limited, a market-leading provider of Windows terminals, thin clients and associated high technology products, is introducing the new high performance VXL Percio thin client appliance. With a new pricing strategy that offers the Percio at 17 per cent less than its nearest competitor, it is the ideal low cost solution for use on Citrix, Microsoft and UNIX based networks.

Available from February 2003, the new Percio is particularly beneficial for the public sector and healthcare industries, or for large businesses looking to increase productivity, security and reliability, while reducing the total cost of ownership. Powered by Gio Linux and Window CE .net. platforms, the Percio is a simple, fast and small footprint terminal that also offers excellent management and configuration.

It is perfect for those who operate within a server-based or UNIX computing environment and need a completely centralised desktop management option that eliminates the need for expensive and time-consuming local management. All of the terminal`s settings can be manipulated from a central server, allowing for more control over the desktop experience. And because users don`t have hard of floppy drives on the desktop, data is rarely stolen, lost or corrupted by computer viruses.

Jay Savoor, director of VXL said, "For organisations that have a significant number of employees using computers, nothing beats thin client terminals. They are particularly easy to deploy and maintain, cheaper to run and give much more control to the employer.

"The ability and skill of our engineers in India to design new products is extremely high, yet the cost base is low. This, coupled with our low sales and distribution costs in Europe, allows us to provide users with high performance robust thin client technology at much lower prices than our competitors. We are confident that our strategy of passing on these savings to the end user will impact positively on sales. We aim to increase market share in Europe from 4% to 18% by 2006. Ultimately, we are looking to duplicate our sub-continent position in Europe, as undisputed market leaders."

The Percio is equipped with Fast Ethernet together with dual USB and PS/2 connectors so that a standard keyboard and mouse can be used. An integrated printer port allows users to connect a standard printer, although users can also take advantage of transparent USB printer support.

Jay Savoor adds, "Unlike other key players in the market, the Percio doesn`t restrict users to a specific printer, keyboard or mouse, so there is no need to purchase additional equipment. And the fact that you are not using any of the USB ports for keyboard and mouse means that they can be used for other applications such as USB modems or USB floppy drives. Percio offers users more flexibility for less money. And uniquely, we even include a keyboard, mouse and free return and replacement warranty."

The new VXL Percio thin client appliance is available at lb165 for Gio Linux and lb185 for CE. For a full list of features and benefits visit www.vxl.net

Thin client technology

A thin client is nothing more than a terminal, albeit a lot faster and far more sophisticated than the terminals of those so-called `dumb` years. It is a device that has built within it, an operating system, networking software and thin client engine. The device acts as a portal onto the server it is connected to. All software runs on the server and stores its results and data on the server, with the thin client having the sole task of displaying the screen data and redirecting the input and output requirements of the user and the software - for example, keyboard and mouse, or sound and printing. Its task is defined and simple. To relay the data from the server either on to the display of to the I/O ports, and to relay data from devices such as the keyboard and mouth back to the server.
