3Com Corporation has announced that Wal-Mart, the world`s largest retailer, has installed a corporate dial back-up solution which includes 3Com Total Control remote access concentrator technology. This solution enables immediate restoration of over 3,000 sites simultaneously, while providing the ability to grow at the rate required to support the growth of domestic and international Wal-Mart stores, Supercenters, and Sam`s Clubs.
"Our network is vital to our store operations and for ensuring that we continue to deliver the highest possible level of service to our customers," says David Flanagan, Wal-Mart`s director of networking. "The immediate network restoration ensures access to on-line elements such as credit card verification, check verification, and Wal-Mart gift cards, all of which are essential to guaranteeing customer satisfaction."
3Com`s Total Control technology is a next-generation, highly scalable, remote access solution that combines the power, security, and scalability that large retail enterprise networks need. Together with in-store 3Com x2 modems, the award-winning Total Control remote access concentrator, is fast becoming the preferred dial-up based solution for frame relay and VSAT wide area networks in use by large retailers. Retailers are assured of getting the maximum dial-up performance possible from 56K capable networks with a 3Com end-to-end solution.
"With the tighter integration of retail functions across all entities in the value chain, including suppliers, financial institutions, logistics companies, and healthcare insurers, real-time information flow is essential to retail operations requiring 100 percent network availability," says 3Com SA`s pre sales manager, Paul Ruinaard.
"3Com`s end-to-end retail enterprise back-up WAN solution, from data center to store, is enabling retailers with frame relay or VSAT based WAN`s to achieve the same degree of fault-tolerance that is designed into their point of sale systems."
Ruinaard points out that more than 700,000 retail stores, including most of the top 100 largest U.S. retailers, currently use 3Com products in their network infrastructure. 3Com`s WAN solution for supporting point of sale transactions is also pervasive throughout the electronic payment industry, he explains.
According to 3Com research, 80 percent, or $640 billion, of all credit card transactions in the U.S. each year are processed over 3Com enabled networks operated by AT&T, CompuServe, VisaNet and others.
