Bidorbuy and Gauteng Business are running an online entrepreneur competition to encourage online business development.

Andy Higgins, MD of Bidorbuy, is an entrepreneur and says he understands the difficulties involved in starting a business.

The online marketplace, in association with Gauteng Business, a bi-weekly newspaper focusing on the small and medium enterprise market, is staging the competition to help South African online entrepreneurs to realise their dreams of starting a business.

"This competition is an inspiring means of bringing innovative ideas within the online industry to fruition," says Higgins.

"The purpose of this initiative is to encourage the development and start-up of online businesses in our community to further the creation of jobs. The competition is open to anyone with an innovative online business idea; however, the winner will be decided based on the idea that is most likely to succeed."

Criteria for the competition are threefold: the idea must be original, the business should be online-based and it must be operated within SA.

To enter, applicants need to provide a short overview of their online business idea, the products or services the business would offer, demonstrate the market sector that these products or services aim to address, and a motivation as to why they believe the company will be successful.

A single winner, the business most likely to succeed, will receive advertising space on the Web site worth R10 000, advertising space in Gauteng Business worth R10 000, as well as a profile interview. Core Concepts will offer a consultancy package to the value of R10 000 and World Wide Worx will provide a copy of the SME Survey 2005, valued at R9 800.

Two runners-up will each receive R5 000 worth of advertising space on the Bidorbuy Web site, as well as a profile interview in Gauteng Business.

The three-man judging panel consists of Arthur Goldstuck, MD of World Wide Worx; Lynda Gibson, MD of Core Concepts; and Higgins.

The Online Publishers` Association has endorsed the competition.
