WD, a Western Digital company, is targeting new markets in SA.
This was announced by Kalvin Subbadu, SA components sales manager at WD, after the company signed a distribution agreement with Corex, a South African-based business-to-consumer distributor.
He noted the agreement will allow WD to tap into new markets by leveraging Corex's reseller base. Under the deal, Corex will supply WD's components storage solutions, such as the colour-coded internal hard drives and data centre hard drives, to its resellers.
Because the WD and Corex's target markets and vertical segmentation are aligned, the appointment will help the Western Digital company grow its market share and further establish its presence in SA, says Subbadu. It will also allow the company to take its offering to new untapped markets, he adds.
Mark Lu, CEO at Corex, says the distribution agreement has strengthened the company's relationship with WD, built on three years as a sub-distributor for the vendor.
Lu says Corex's immediate plans are to aggressively promote the WD's hard drive range into its reseller market and tier-one customer base - providing them with hard drive technologies geared for particular purposes and specific applications and backed by a strong brand.
"Our key challenge is to ensure the end-user selects the right hard drive for the appropriate application. We are resolving this problem with the creation of our colour-coded hard drives, which makes it easier to choose the right hard drive," says Subbadu.
End-users tend to use the wrong drive in their application which leads to premature failure of drives, he adds.
As data centres evolve in response to the explosive growth of unstructured data, the requirements from an enterprise-class hard drive need to be extended to support scale-out architectures, notes Subbadu.
Organisations in SA should invest in the appropriate hard drive technology to support data storage, cloud and business application to remain competitive and relevant, he adds.
