A free to use, map-based crime reporting Web site, Crime Aware, has been unveiled in SA, enabling people to report crimes in their area and receive of incidents in a specified radius.

All crimes reported, says Crime Aware, are mapped on street maps which users can easily navigate and view.

According to Crime Aware, by sharing information and raising general awareness of localised offences, people can become more proactive and bring down crime levels.

The community Web site, says the company, was inspired by former New York City mayor, Rudolph Giuliani. He installed a computer-based crime mapping system called CompStat in the 1990s, bringing crimes in that city down in a very short time.

However, Crime Aware stresses that crimes still need to be reported to the police and not only on the Web site.

Gerald Yapp, MD of In-Detail Advertising and Design, the company which developed the site, says it will soon expand to support mobile phones, RSS feeds and SMS notifications.

“Based on the success of Crime Aware, we will continue developing the Web site and also complete work on our other exciting Web site ideas that we have had in incubation," concludes Yapp.
