Websense awarded two patents for Internet intelligence

Johannesburg, 04 Apr 2007

SecureData, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group and a southern African distributor for Websense, today announced that the latter has received two patents for the proprietary technologies that provide Web site and application classification intelligence to Websense software.

These technologies help protect organisations from threats to information security and employee productivity due to unmanaged use of the Web or unauthorised applications.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted Websense:

* Patent #7,194,464, entitled "System and Method for Adapting an Internet Filter", which ensures that new or not yet classified Web sites visited by employees are categorised and added to the Websense master database
* Patent #7,185,015, entitled "System and Method of Monitoring and controlling Application Files," which ensures that new or not yet classified applications and executables launched by employees are categorised and added to the Websense master database.

By leveraging the technologies protected by these patents, Websense software is being constantly updated with Internet and employee usage intelligence to provide unmatched protection to customers.

These two recently patented technologies are two components of the Websense ThreatSeeker technology, publicly unveiled in October 2006. In addition to the more than 100 proprietary processes and systems used by ThreatSeeker to decipher emerging and complex threats, these technologies provide an important additional layer of feedback intelligence from customers to enhance their Web security.

"These patents represent important and cutting-edge innovation from Websense engineering," commented John McCormack, senior vice-president of product development, Websense. "These two recently patented technologies have proven value in providing our customers with advanced security filtering, and they are important milestones in delivering capabilities that help fill the gaps left by traditional security solutions."

Websense ThreatSeeker delivers pre-emptive protection from Web-based security threats - threats typically missed or too costly to prevent using security technologies such as anti-virus and intrusion prevention systems. Unlike these approaches, Websense seeks out threats on the Internet before customers are compromised and protects customers before patches and signatures are created. As a result, organisations are automatically protected from the latest threats within minutes, without massive costs and administrative burdens and without having to guess what attacks may look like in the future.
