Websense tops VeriTest comparison of Web content filtering applications for Web filtering, security

Johannesburg, 06 Mar 2006

SecureData, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group and a southern African distributor for Websense, today announced the results of VeriTest's study that compared Web content filtering applications for Web filtering and for Web security accuracy, effectiveness and performance.

VeriTest is a division of Lionbridge Technologies, Inc, and conducted the above study with the following products:

* Secure Computing SmartFilter Corporate v4.1
* SurfControl Web Filter v5.01.39
* Websense Web Security Suite - Lockdown Edition v5.5

The VeriTest study focused on blocking effectiveness testing, specific malicious and spyware URL testing, and non-HTTP protocol testing.

The testing consisted of passing more than 400 000 URLs through each software product to determine filter accuracy and blocking effectiveness. These 400 000 URLs included Web sites in the following six categories: adult, drugs, information technology, security, bandwidth and productivity.

Through the testing process, VeriTest concluded that Websense significantly surpassed the other products that were compared in terms of Web filtering, accuracy and diverse categorisation and also found that Websense's product made the fewest errors in identification and blocking. In addition, Websense far surpassed competitor performance in identifying dangerous URLs that lead to Keylogger or Trojan horse installers as well as URLs leading to spyware or malware. Furthermore, the Websense product was the only product tested that provided filtering by protocol in addition to URL filtering.

Re the latter, Websense was the only product in its 'out-of-the-box' configuration to provide easy blocking of non-HTTP related protocols, such as those used by instant messaging applications, P2P (peer-to-peer), anonymous browsing utilities and streaming media. Websense demonstrated the ability to block these applications from communicating within the test network in almost every scenario tested. All seven of the most commonly used peer-to-peer file sharing applications were blocked by Websense, including iMesh, Aries and Kazaa, GhostSurf, Google Web Accelerator and Hopster Proxy Avoidance applications. Four of the most common remote desktop applications including Go2MyPC and PCAnywhere were also blocked by Websense.
