Self-service to streamline book borrowing

Australia's Mount Gambier public library users will soon begin a new chapter in the way books are borrowed at the facility, reports The Border Watch.

With the opening of the new multi-million-dollar library just months away, employees are busy this week attaching frequency tags on the facility's 60 000 books so they can be borrowed in new self-service kiosks.

The technology is state-of-the-art for modern libraries and will mean the end of manual borrowing procedures for library staff. Each year staff members manually perform 320 000 borrowings for library users, which absorbs a significant percentage of their time.
