Wells Fargo outsources to Philippines

by has started to transfer some of its non-core business support activities to the Philippines, ABS-CBNnews.com reports.

Wells Fargo has recently established a Philippine solutions centre, reinforcing Manila's reputation as a global hub for labour-intensive and IT-enabled outsourcing services, said former senator Ernesto Herrera, president of labour group Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP).

The Philippine labour sector is “counting on Wells Fargo's new centre to help provide gainful employment to our college-, fluent English-speaking professionals, many of whom remain idle”, added Herrera, former chairman of the Senate committee on labour, employment and human resources development, Interaksyon writes.

Part of the thrust of TUCP has been to recruit more members in the BPO sector. The moderate labour centre now includes Voice, a labour federation of contact centre employees.

The American bank's decision to shift more jobs offshore comes amid worries over a US anti-outsourcing bill, Philippine News notes.

The proposed US Call Centre and Consumer Protection Act, introduced by New York Rep Tim Bishop, would require the US Department of Labour to track firms that shift contact centre jobs overseas.
