A US announcement that Avaya Inc. - a leading provider of communications systems - has agreed to acquire VPNet Technologies, a privately held developer of virtual private networks (VPNs), presents an opportunity to broaden Westcon SA`s data networking solutions for enterprise market.
Westcon`s channel manager Imran Ebrahim, says the proposed acquisition could complement current offerings giving customers a wider choice of VPN solutions.
"VPNet Technologies develops and markets high-performance VPN solutions to service providers and enterprises. The company`s scaleable VPNware Systems deliver high levels of security, performance and manageability across a wide range of VPN applications.
"Its VPNsure Managed Services Programme enables service providers and enterprises to outsource implementation and management of their VPNs," says Ebrahim.
Avaya`s solutions currently include silicon-based gigabit Ethernet LAN switches and routers, wireless LAN solutions, multi-service wide area network switches, security systems for enterprises, and policy management systems.
"The addition of VPNet could strengthen our capabilities in data networking allowing customers to take advantage of benefits from VPNs of security, productivity and cost-effectiveness," explains Ebrahim.
He adds that with a VPN, an enterprise can use the public network - including the Internet - to make its communications network more flexible and cost effective for voice and data communications with its branch offices and virtual office and mobile employees.
VPNs offer security associated with a private network combined with cost savings and the speed of deployment associated with the public network.
