Westcon's practical guidelines for cloud implementation

The reasons for an organisation wanting to implement a computing solution could include a need to reduce costs, to improve productivity and to encourage users and customers to engage more effectively.

So says Westcon SA CEO Jacques Malherbe, who points out that the way in which people access, consume and create content is changing. He was speaking at the Westcon road show, held yesterday.

Architecture needs to be built for what's happening now, yet it also needs to be understood and that's where the problem lies - people have different understandings of technology terms, Malherbe noted.

Technology has become a disrupter, and to overcome this, the right architecture and infrastructure must be built to cope with these changes, he said. Enterprises must be built around architectures and not the other way round, he added.

Businesses should combine enablement and end-user performance management, Malherbe said.

Every organisation's journey into the cloud is an extremely personal one, as no company has the same requirement in terms of cloud computing. To this end, Malherbe suggests the following: break up the stages of implementation of cloud computing into various components and acquire knowledge to understand each phase.

Then socialise the idea into the organisation; talk about it, he added, as this encourages people to get involved. Create a roadmap, as this will promote step-by-step action and eliminate the of falling into the trap of a point solution.

When implementing the final phase - deployment - Malherbe says organisations must ask how the solution will be rolled out and how it will achieve returns.

Cloud computing is forcing innovation, and organisations must take blended approaches to IT architecture, best practices and frameworks, Malherbe said.
