Western Digital adds Dropbox support
Digital has added Dropbox support to its WD 2go mobile app, allowing customers to shuffle batches of files between their 'personal clouds', mobile devices and the popular cloud storage service, Macworld reports.
The development is another sign of how previously isolated hardware backup drives with simple backup routines are becoming Internet appliances ruled by software.
In a typical scenario, users might capture images on their mobile devices, which could then be sent back to their personal clouds or a home-based Western Digital hard drive, such as the My BookLive, My Book Live Duo (a larger version) or My Net N900 router with integrated storage.
With the upgrade to the free WD 2go mobile app for iPhone, iPad or Android devices, the same files could now also be copied to Dropbox as well as to the home cloud drive.
The new version of WD 2go lets customers move, copy and share content between their mobile devices, their Dropbox accounts and their WD personal clouds by combining the benefits of personal and public cloud storage into one app, MenaFN.com says.
For example, if users have a small number of photos they want to share with their friends, they can copy them from their personal clouds into their Dropbox using the WD 2go app.
But if they have a very large number of photos, or files that are too big for their Dropbox, they can use WD 2go to send a secure link to the files via e-mail.
