A laptop-based frequency spectrum analysis solution for networks has been launched in SA, aimed at corporate applications.

WLAN and performance solutions provider AirMagnet`s Spectrum Analyser is being marketed by Concilium Technologies, sole local distributor of AirMagnet products.

Concilium security consultant Craig Rosewarne says AirMagnet Spectrum Analyser is based on Cognio`s Intelligent Spectrum Management System and is able to identify specific sources of interference that can undermine the performance of wireless networks.

"The AirMagnet Spectrum Analyser complements AirMagnet Laptop, a WiFi performance and security troubleshooting tool, with its ability to proactively identify and find the sources of interference in all WiFi bands," says Rosewarne.

It can identify specific interfering devices in real-time, including Bluetooth, cordless phones, microwave ovens and video cameras, Rosewarne adds.

"Spectrum analysis can provide our customers valuable information that helps them diagnose network problems, but only if the information is specific and presented in a way that is easy to understand," he says.

"Cognio`s technology adds intelligent analysis that is not possible with proprietary hardware solutions. Used in conjunction with AirMagnet`s WLAN Laptop Analyser, the Spectrum Analyser allows users to ensure maximum network security and uptime for their wireless networks."

Rosewarne says wireless networks in corporate environments are often susceptible to interference.

"This can be a huge problem, and a network can start running slowly as a result of interference. It`s often difficult to determine what the source of the problem is. This solution can also be used by manufacturing companies, which are using wireless networks as part of their manufacturing processes, where a whole host of things could create interference."
