Microsoft says its much-anticipated Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system is on track to be available to South African consumers in time for the December holidays.
The company announced that Windows Phone 7 had been released to manufacturing (RTM) - tech-speak that means the operating system has been finalised and delivered to a range of hardware partners and mobile operators worldwide to integrate it with their devices and networks.
This software milestone, announced on the Windows Phone Blog this week, delivers a range of brand-new feature enhancements that address concerns expressed in previews of the system, which Microsoft believes will propel it back into the mobile market with a vengeance.
"Windows Phone 7 is a big step for Microsoft. With the RTM of Windows Phone 7, we are one step closer to bringing a more complete experience mobile to consumers than ever before," said Nkosi Kumalo, marketing lead for Windows Phone in SA.
Early reviews suggest that Windows Phone 7 features an innovative user interface with smart design, offering what the company calls "a fresh approach to phone software".
