Wipro targets African telcos

outsourcing deals with two African telecom operators, in a bid to target the fast-growing sector in the continent, reveals The Wall Street Journal.

Wipro Infotech runs the technology business in India, Middle East and Africa for Wipro.

"A reasonably large deal would be worth between $50 million to $100 million for Indian companies," Anand Sankaran, who heads Wipro Infotech, told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview recently.

However, according to Fox Business Sankaran didn't name the telcos, or give the exact contract values.

Under the five-year contracts, Wipro Infotech will manage the software applications services of one operator and support the telecom infrastructure of the other, Sankaran said.

“The deal has got a huge potential for growth... we're getting a reasonably good chunk of their businesses," he said.

The CIOL also reports that Wipro has revealed that it has completed ten years of operations in the Middle East.

With over 1 300 employees servicing the region and 100-plus customers, Wipro says the company has emerged as a strategic IT to some of the biggest names in the region and Middle East has proved to be the growth engine for Wipro among emerging markets.
