SecureWorx, the South African developer of security products, today announced its Basilisk family of Gateway Security Appliances for the wireless (802.11) environment.
There is no doubt that wireless technology is here to stay. Using this technology means less wiring, effortless connection and significant remote versatility; however, it potentially poses a security nightmare.
Wireless, by its very nature, effortlessly broadcasts private information to surrounding areas and adjacent systems. Hijacking of information from within or outside an organisation is an issue, and it is very simple for hackers using appropriate sniffing technology to connect and in some cases obtain a DHCP-issued IP address for an internal private network. This practice is commonly known as War-Driving.
Operating on the 2.4GHz bandwidth and obtaining speeds of 1Gbps extends the reach and capability of this technology; distances and bandwidth are increasing by the day with each new development.
What can be done, since wireless is becoming a standard interface option in most environments? New network layer algorithms are constantly being developed that are more difficult to crack than their predecessors, but this process takes time, and solutions are needed today. Additionally, good security must take place on multiple layers within the OSI stack.
The solution lies in the new development from SecureWorx that is a combination of technologies and practices. The new wireless Gateway Security Appliance provides VPN tunnels that not only provide a strongly encrypted session across the wireless connection but also enforces an authentication process incorporating digital certificates and/or other authentication technologies, thus preventing hijacking attacks from either within or without.
