The winner of a Wits University Information Systems (IS) Academy project, a team called Sys.Sol, will go on to a national competition.
The winner was named after a third-year software development project day at the university.
Sys.Sol, which developed an information system that meets "real-world" business challenges, is heading for the National Firefly competition.
"The students will be invited to participate in the finals of the national competition to be held in Port Elizabeth on 28November," says Dr Maria Jakovljevic of the Wits University IS department.
"The project day held at the university last week displayed projects developed throughout the year by students, using information technology to solve a business challenge met by a particular client," says Jason Cohen, IS department head of division at Wits.
"Sys.Sol initiated a project that generates database-driven reports on-the-fly in Microsoft Excel format using Web browser archive reports for faster viewing," says Jakovljevic. "It controls access to specific reports and data, and also allows users to submit requests and tracks the status of their requests."
"The projects were developed for the university and they can only be implemented at that particular client`s business," says Cohen.
"The aim of the project is to ensure students are better prepared to enter the IS industry and function in team-based work structures, having had 'real-world` experience.
"Microsoft donated the year`s subscription to the Microsoft Developers` Network Academic Alliance for students to use to build their projects," he says.
