A three-day World Triple Play IPTV Forum began in Stockholm yesterday, featuring over 20 international speakers.

"The event will provide a closed forum and an excellent platform for participants not only to share their experiences, but also to do business," notes the event organiser Marcus Evans in a statement.

The International Data Corporation (IDC) predicted Internet video services, such as IPTV and video-on-demand, will be a $1.7 billion market by 2010.

In 2004, the market for IPTV services in Western Europe was worth $62 million, according to the IDC statement, posted on the forum`s Web site.

The convergence of telephony, broadcasting and IT, known as triple play, "has given rise to a hyper-competitive market environment where all market players need to deliver broadband, multimedia, and value-added services to win new customers and to retain existing ones," Marcus Evans adds.

The key objectives of the conference are to provide a platform for delegates to learn from and meet potential partners in the content and entertainment industries; better understand the complexities of bundling and billing for Internet video services; and discover how to optimise network infrastructure for video.

More IPTV events will follow this year, including the third annual China Broadband Triple Play/IPTV Forum in Bejing next month, the IPTV World Forum Eastern Europe on 22 and 23 June in Budapest, and the IPTV World Forum Asia, 27 to 29 September in Shanghai.
