Western Province and Stormers Rugby recently concluded a sponsorship agreement with enterprise data backup and recovery solutions specialist, CIBECS.
“WP Rugby decided on CIBECS because we were looking for continuity in a single, automated, platform for all user data backups to one central point,” says WP Rugby Group's IT Manager, Marchant van der Merwe. “CIBECS has the added benefit of helping us maximise the use of our existing IT infrastructure, while ensuring we are in line with governance, risk and compliance (GRC) regulations (view checklist for SA businesses) and enhancing our overall business continuity practices.”
Before the implementation of CIBECS, the organisation's users were expected to protect their critical data by only working in their home folder on the file server (as per the group's data backup policy) but this methodology proved unsuccessful, exposing WP Rugby to the possible costs and related implications of critical data loss.
“Most users forgot to backup their desktop-located files to the file server, while some did not want to save sensitive information on a location where there was a potential risk of unauthorised access,” says Van der Merwe. “CIBECS enables us to enforce our data backup policy without any user involvement or impact on user PCs. The solution also encrypts data during the backup process, which goes a long way to allay fears of unauthorised access to sensitive information.”
“It is our experience that many companies rely on similar data backup policies (instructing users to backup to a file server or external device) for the security of their business-critical data,” says CIBECS Marketing Manager, Brandon Faber. “Our 2011 Data Loss Survey revealed that 47% of companies relied on some data backup policy as their primary defence against user data loss. Not surprisingly, the option 'users do not follow our policy' was also listed as the number one cause of data loss.”
By implementing CIBECS, WP Rugby not only safeguards itself against the implications of data loss, but also, takes great strides towards aligning itself with GRC best practices - an especially significant step, given the requirements of South Africa's new Protection of Personal Information (PPI) Bill - currently being drafted.
“Over and above its usefulness in terms of GRC, we are very happy with the solution's recovery performance and its ability to reduce pressures on our existing storage and bandwidth infrastructure,” says Van der Merwe.
“In our opinion, CIBECS is the benchmark solution for endpoint user data security.”
