Wyse proves chip, PIN compatible

Johannesburg, 15 Sep 2005

Wyse has successfully completed approval testing in the UK for a `chip and PIN` solution, allowing customers to confidently extend their adoption of thin client technology to accept and process payments.

Introduced in 2003 to combat card fraud, the move from magnetic stripe cards to chip and PIN cards with an integrated circuit is being driven by the Association of Payment Clearing Services, the UK payments trade association for institutions delivering payments services to end customers.

Since January 2005, liability for footing the bill for card fraud has changed. Where previously banks and building societies took responsibility, retailers who fail to adopt chip and PIN will have to pay for card fraud that affects them.

This represents a considerable liability, given that last year the total bill for card fraud in the UK was estimated at about half a billion pounds.

The testing, completed in June, involved Wyse working closely with chip and PIN software and hardware market leaders Retail Logic, Dione and Ingenico. A Wyse Winterm 9150SE with a standard XPe image was loaded with Retail Logic`s EMV level 2 accredited chip and PIN software, Smart-Switch. Smart-Switch allows card reading devices to be connected to the network via the thin client.

Meanwhile, the Wyse Winterm was networked to a server running Retail Logic`s core card validation and authorisation software Solve/SE, which enables merchants to accept and store transactions locally in the event of a network failure.

Two portable payment terminals from market leaders Dione and Ingenico were then connected to the Winterm 9150SE and extensive trials executed. The Wyse device proved to be 100% compatible.
