Music mogul Simon Cowell is reportedly going to use his formula for hit reality TV shows to find the next great tech entrepreneur, as opposed to another pop star.

The Sun reports that Cowell is teaming up with singer Will.i.am, of the Black Eyed Peas, to devise a new series that will supposedly discover the next Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates or Steve Jobs.

Will.i.am is quoted by The Sun as saying: "We're working on a project called X Factor for Tech - and it's going to be out of this world.

"Singing and performance create a couple of jobs. But this will create lots. It's about getting in touch with youth and giving them a platform to express themselves ? whether that's in science or mathematics."

While details are few and far between, if the suggested project title is anything to go by, X Factor for Tech will see tech entrepreneurs pitching their big ideas to a panel of all-star judges - with the standard measure of reality TV drama thrown in.

Will.i.am has recently been moving into the tech scene and is the "director of creative innovation" for Intel. He has also been promoting tech and recently composed a song that was the first to be transmitted from Earth to Mars via the Curiosity Rover.

X Factor for Tech won't be the first reality show to try and translate the tech world into mainstream pop culture. American Bravo is due to debut a new series titled "Silicon Valley" in the coming weeks. The reality-show is produced by Randi Zuckerberg and "captures the intertwining lives of young professionals on the path to becoming Silicon Valley's next great success stories".

News of the potential new X Factor show has spread to the social networks. Some of the top comments on Twitter include the following:

"Imagine the sob stories for Simon Cowell's XFactor-like tech TV series: 'I didn't backup my files... [sniff] I've lost everything!'"

"Cowell & Will.I.am to create a Xfactor style show to find the next Zuck or Gates. Fortunately you can't auto tune a tech start-up."
