Xerox claims new software, which addresses alternative ways of tagging text and images, could have a significant impact on the way searches are conducted.
Marco Bressan, a computer scientist at Xerox`s European research centre in Grenoble, France, says the categorisation breakthrough will lead to more effective document retrieval.
"Until now, searches have either been conducted on text or images. However, today`s documents are much smarter; they are a combination of the two to arrive at a final document. By linking text and images in a search, the outcomes are far more accurate and richer," he explains.
Bressan says the hybrid categorisation has several uses within the corporate and consumer world.
"From a consumer point of view, the software identifies the content of the photos and matches these to text within a blog, for instance. For businesses, this technology will help the creation and management of more effective documents. The application could be pushed to the automatic routing and mining of documents, database retrieval and document management streamlining," he says.
The international document solution vendor has not confirmed when this technology will be made commercially available. However, it has displayed its merits in various forums, competitions and exhibitions.
