Xerox/SDD fine-tune distribution model

The local subsidiary of Xerox Channels Group (XCG) has, in conjunction with its sole distributor, Siltek Distribution Dynamics (SDD), effected changes to its distribution which are expected to reduce lead times dramatically.

According to Dereck Hindry, Director of SDD`s and peripherals business unit, SDD will set up and maintain a distribution centre at its premises in Midrand through which Xerox stock will be funnelled.

"The biggest problem we had in the past was the existence of two warehousing operations - our own and another at Xerox in Isando. This often resulted in unexpectedly long lead times as orders had to be processed first by Xerox` systems and subsequently by our own," he explains.

"All XCG stock will henceforth be shipped directly to SDD`s warehouse and we should be able to offer same day delivery for orders received before 10:00 am. Thereafter product will be scheduled for collection/delivery nationally the following day."

Angie Samuel, marketing manager at XCG SA, believes the new distribution model will benefit resellers by offering more immediate access to Xerox products. "At the low-end of the market the difference between receiving and losing orders can often be put down to efficiency, or lack thereof, in the distribution mechanism."

Samuel describes the change in strategy as an evolution. "With the phenomenal growth we`ve experienced since setting up shop some twelve months ago, it was always inevitable that we would outgrow the initial infrastructure. Clearly that time has arrived."
