MTN and the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) have jointly launched pay phones for use in minibus taxis.
The initiative, called MTN Ring`uvaya (which means 'phone while you travel`), aims to give South African taxi commuters access to cellular communication while they travel.
The Ring`uvaya package includes a taxi pay phone with a SIM card loaded with airtime, a control unit, two handsets, an antenna and cables and adaptors.
Once the taxi owner or driver has the product installed, commuters will be able to make calls from inside the taxi at a rate of 50c per unit, with the taxi owner taking a cut of the profit.
The taxi payphones will be rolled out across SA, initially targeting KwaZulu-Natal.
"This initiative will create wealth for the taxi industry, and I am confident that MTN Ring`uvaya will become a successful mobile access system for the masses," says Irene Charnley, commercial director at MTN.
"In line with Santaco`s slogan - transformation, peace and prosperity - we are committed to transforming the lives of SA`s taxi drivers, owners and commuters, and will not let these important stakeholders down," says Santaco president Tom Muofhe.
