YIP still going strong

Johannesburg, 06 Aug 2004

The State IT Agency's (SITA's) youth internship programme (YIP) has trained one youth for every two days since it launched two years ago, and is confident it will be able to place them all in jobs.

The agency says since the programme's inception two years ago, it has trained 366 youths aged between 18 and 35 years old with a ratio of 51% female and 5% disabled.

The internship programme is a SITA training initiative in partnership with the Department of Public and Administration, Public Sector and Training Authority, and Umsombomvu Youth Fund.

SITA says YIP's partners spend about R81 000 per annum on training every learner. This includes a monthly allowance for each learner, coupled with classroom training and workplace/practical experience.

Of the 366 students who have embarked on training, 175 are already in full-time employment at SITA, government departments and in the private sector, and 120 are still going through their workplace training programme at SITA and government departments.

The balance (71 students) will be placed with various employers once the negotiations with prospective employers have been concluded.

SITA and its partners have also engaged GITOC and SALGA to identify practical experience opportunities for learners and possible employment upon completion of their training.

SITA recently signed an agreement with the Universal Services Agency (USA), whereby it will provide USA with students from the programme and act as a formal workplace provider.
