Jitagroup, a youth centre based in Roodekop, south of Johannesburg, has called on companies to donate their redundant IT and office equipment to boost a youth development initiative.
"We are currently looking for monitors, keyboards, cables, printers, chairs, educational software, educational games, books and other items that companies want to dispose of," says project co-ordinator Dumisane Mtshali.
The group will collect the redundant items and even clean up the donor company`s storeroom afterwards.
"The equipment will be used to create an IT centre in the area. My goal is to get a shipping container and create more space to accommodate more people and more computers," he says.
At least 30 youths visit the Jitagroup centre on a daily basis.
"We have computer literate youths who are looking for permanent or temporary placements and are currently participating in community projects. I want to help them to access the Internet, write CVs and learn additional IT skills," says Mtshali.
So far, the centre has managed to fix five computers and Mtshali hopes this number will increase significantly by the end of this year.
