Zimbra, a division of Yahoo, has unveiled Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) 6.0 with expanded calendaring, sharing and enhanced mobile support.

According to Zimbra, version 6 extends the open Zimlet platform to third-party developers, and improves enterprise collaboration through a host of new community-driven features.

As part of ZCS 6.0, Zimbra says it will further open its application platform, including the Zimlet and mobile application programming interfaces, to provide increased flexibility to its community of customers, partners, and developers.

With the new Zimlet platform, a Zimbra customer or can build out fully-featured applications directly within the collaboration suite, which pulls in information from third-party sources, says the company.

For example, a new VOIP Zimlet from Broadsoft enables a unified communications experience for Zimbra partners.

“We've crossed a huge milestone, reaching 50 million paid mailboxes in less than four years,” said Jim Morrisroe, Yahoo VP and general manager of Zimbra.

Morrisoe added that this growth has been “fuelled by the support and feedback of our diverse community of customers, developers, and partners”.

The key features in ZCS 6.0 were determined by votes from Zimbra users. This enabled Zimbra to build a “premier e-mail and collaboration suite to address top requests, meet market demand, and position us to continue our strong global growth,“ says Morrisoe.

As part of the ZCS 6.0 development process, Zimbra also carried out an evaluation of new collaboration platforms to pair with Microsoft Outlook, including those from all the major software vendors, says Bartek Brzozowski, centre manager, Agora SA.

In addition, a new social media Zimlet enables users to read and post tweets to Twitter and manage updates from Facebook and Digg from directly within their ZCS inbox.
